Busy or not...

Six months...really?  Been away a while.  Still old school in the shaving and grooming department.  Been doing some pomade tests.  I've been a big fan of much of the Murray's line(s)...I finally figured out the original (use lightly and with a hairdryer), I like Nu-Nile (can use as is), and they produce the Sweet Georgia Brown line (have all of them but blue seems to be the best in my hair).  I will write up more formalized reviews (and do them a bit more too) as it goes.

This week: Deluxe Pomade.

Before I begin the review let me say a word about Dan and the service he provides.  The website tells the story of how Dan came up with this product on his own after trying several readily available brands.  I had a little difficulty with my order.  I bought the product through the website and Dan acknowledged it immediately and if memory serves it shipped the next day.  The difficulty comes in here.  Dan ships Priority Mail and I’ve had very few issues with this shipping method with the USPS.  For some odd reason it took a week from when Dan shipped my package for the USPS to acknowledge they had the thing.  It arrived a couple of days after this.  During the week gap I contacted Dan who was more than willing to send out a replacement.  Fortunately the post office found the first one and it arrived.  Dan was pleasant, apologetic, and very, very prompt in replying to my emails.  Now onto the review…

This is a big tin of pomade.  Dan sells an 8oz. tin for $10 plus shipping.  The pomade is a very solid, milky white puck.  It has a light scent of mint and aftershave (that clean somewhat soapy note).  It is early November here in New Orleans so the mornings trend toward the cool (it was hovering right at 60 this morning) and the puck was very firm, leaning towards hard.  I borrowed the wife’s hairdryer and gave it a blast of hot air.  Dan has a different product here – many pomades when heated go very runny and soft.  Dan’s softens but retains much of its texture.  I rubbed the softened glob between my palms to further heat and soften it for application.  I keep my hair in a classic side part and somewhat slicked (bit similar to the style of Don Draper, for popular reference).  What I want in a pomade is hold and a little shine.  Deluxe delivers on both counts. The very front of my hair has a natural wave to it and very few pomades (Murray’s Original and Rumble59’s Schmere Knuppelhart) can hold this back all day.  Deluxe is doing it with ease.  I’ve used this pomade for a week – a week that has seen warm days (nearly 80 degrees) and cool/cold days (AM temps in the upper 40’s to low 50’s, highs just reaching 60) all with a fair amount of wind and Deluxe has held my hair in place with no problems.  This is great pomade – right hold, clean scent, and really good value.  I would recommend trying this one without hesitation.  In the interest of disclosure I purchased this from deluxepomade.com.

Good shower, close shave, and smellin' good. Best news: cold front moving through today that should drop the temps by about 15-20 degrees. Hopefully it'll be some relief on the electric bill.

Start something new and look what happens...

I started this blog and had intended to post somewhat regularly. Instead nearly a month has gone by since my initial postings and I've posted exactly nothing. I've been busy...trying to get my business off the ground, looking for a regular full-time job, cooking, cleaning, anon... This morning is no different...have baked a pan of scones, bread is in the oven, and chutney is bubbling away outside on the portable burner. Dinner tonight is fishcakes with a veggie of some form.

More to follow today.

The start of a day

I have long ago come to the understanding that I am an Old Man at heart.  I'm very comfortable with this idea.  There are times, in fact, that I relish it.  It is a comfort to be out of step with the nonsensical world in which I live.

My days always start in the same manner - coffee, shower, shave, and dress.  Sometimes the process takes a little longer (especially the coffee) but routine is not always a bad thing.

This space will be a combination blog - daily shaves, dress and groomimg, rants, and my personal viewpoint.  It'll be interesting to share this with the ether and it's inhabitants.  If anyone reads and decides to comment my rules are simple - be civil.  You don't have to agree with me as much as I don't have to agree with you.  Ad hominem attacks are a sign of an unsupported position and will NOT be tolerated.  So...away we go.
